Older May Be Better – Business Startups

2019-09-12T17:17:49+00:00

Feel like you are too old to become an entrepreneur? I took an early-out from a stressful corporate career and started my small business at age 42. I believe my age prepared me for the hard work and laser like focus I needed to build a business. I would never have understood what it would take at age 22 or even 32. I recently came across a great article on the myth of “startups are no place for Baby Boomers” during one of my early morning reads at Entrepreneur.com. Martin Swilling writes about this subject in “Baby Boomers, Who Are More Successful as Entrepreneurs, Are Great Startup Assets“. Word! (as the kids say).

“Boomers are well-qualified overall, having worked with high technology and computers for at least 20 years, highly educated and highly motivated. In addition to being the startup entrepreneur, there are other key roles where Boomers can be a force in driving successful startups, in concert with leaders from Gen-X and Gen-Y”

Can I say how motivated I was to visualize myself along the likes of Mr. Richard Branson?

The Road to Somewhere

2019-09-04T17:33:06+00:00

The daily grind can get a person down. All the daily issues that we deal with no matter what business we are in can get us thinking about throwing in the entrepreneurial towel. It can be heavy. It can be stressful. It can just get old. You just can’t get caught up disproportionately in the day to day stuff. You must focus on the the big picture. When I get bogged down in minutia I look up at a note I’ve left myself.

This brings me back to the reality of what I’m really working so hard on. It isn’t emails or filing or psyching my introverted self up for a networking event. It’s helping people make a living in small business. It’s earning my own living. It’s providing for my family and home. It’s health and happiness. It’s travel! Indeed, we are not lost in the days. We are all on the road to our somewhere….

Get Inspired

2019-09-12T17:07:06+00:00

I always return from vacations invigorated. Inspired, I hit the office like a productivity Tasmanian Devil; amazed at what I accomplish and how great I feel. I’m so clear on how beneficial rest and recreation time is….yet I do a terrible job of following this principle on the average days. Now I happen to have my home base in the fittest county of the fittest state in the US. It also happens to be a Great Outdoors paradise with mountain biking, hiking, stand-up paddleboarding, river rafting, skiing – all accessible 3 minutes from my front door. So yeah I do get out. When I do I am rewarded with that same rejuvenation I seek. Why then do I punish myself with long computer days with no breaks? Why then do I sit staring at the Smartphone at 8pm? Why do I eat lunch at my desk?! There is the fact that I’m so passionate about not only my work but also those who’ve entrusted us with such important responsibilities that I want to be there for everyone, all the time helping. There is the fact that I simply love what I do. In the small business world, the work-life balance is always tricky to achieve and I’m working hard to find it daily. I really, really like the days that I do….
